CINCINNATI HALF MARATHON
June 28, 2014
Start Line:  On Mehring Way at Public Landing

NO FRILLS RACING MOVES TO EARLY SUMMER FOR 2014

WHAT IS NO FRILLS RACING?

The Cincinnati Half Marathon wants to provide you with a great race experience.  A safe course with lots of volunteers.  Plenty of aid stations with water, ice and Gatorade.  Portapotties throughout the course.  A flat, fast run in Downtown Cincinnati.  Great finisher medals to commemorate your achievement.  Our goal is to provide you with the best opportunity all season to PR or complete that first half marathon.

No frills racing means low entry fees because there are things you don't have to pay for.  Because we are a race, where we want to help you achieve your goals, we do not have all the fou-fou extras that you have to pay for, with higher entry fees,  at other races.  We save you money by not having goody bags full of paper and coupons, not having bands on the course (we figure you entered the Cincinnati Half Marathon to run or walk, not listen to music), and, just being up front here, not providing a full meal at the finish line (we do, of course, have food and liquids to replenish your energy).  We have also heard from many athletes that they do not wish a tshirt so we offer a tshirt as an ala carte item (see tshirt policy, below).

No frills racing means that entry fees are as low as we can make them.  An affordable, flat and fast race without frills DOES NOT mean that the quality of the race suffers.

What does no frills racing provide?

  • A flat, fast and scenic course that is USATF certified

  • Tons of volunteers on the course to make sure your race experience goes well

  • As many aid stations as needed

  • Lots of portapotties throughout the course

  • Top quality finisher's medals

  • The best tshirts and other race apparel

  • Lots and lots of fun

Simply put, we want to focus our resources on a top quality race experience and pass the savings on to you.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHM'S TSHIRT POLICY

Not everybody wants a Tshirt.  Why pay for a Tshirt if you don't want one?  When you enter the Cincinnati Half Marathon, you do not automatically get a Tshirt with your entry.  You must purchase the Tshirt separately. We are passing the savings on to you by only supplying shirts to those that want them.

Shirts must be ordered on or before June 20th to receive it at Packet Pick up.

We do order extra shirts and usually have enough for those who either failed to order one or entered after June 20th.  Extra shirts will be available for sale at the finish line on race day.

FLAT AND FAST!

Yes, you can set a PR in Cincinnati!  The Cincinnati Marathon features a flat and fast course.

Starting Mehring Way, just above Public Landing, runners wind their way along the Ohio River, past the Bengals' and Reds' stadiums.  After a loop around the historic Longworth Building on W. Pete Rose Way, the course goes back to the Reds' Stadium and then climbs into downtown via Race St.  Once at 5th St. the course goes through the heart of Downtown, past world famous Fountain Square (remember the intro to WKRP Cincinnati?), to Riverside Drive.  The bulk of our course is on Riverside Drive, paralleling the Ohio River.  The Finish Line is at Sawyer Point, on the Plaza above the Serpentine Wall.

WALK DIVISION

The Cincinnati Half Marathon is a walk friendly race.   Course cut off times of 4 hours (20 minutes per mile) leave plenty of time for all walkers and runners to complete the course.

The Walk Division is for walkers only.  (Note if you enter the Cincinnati Half Marathon you may walk or run or any combination thereof).  If you are unsure whether you are a walker then you should enter the Half Marathon so that you have the option of running should you wish to do so.

If you enter the Walk division of the Cincinnati Half Marathon you will be scored as a walker and agree that you will complete the Cincinnati Half Marathon by walking.  Running any portion of the race is prohibited.

Course cut off time are 20 minutes a mile.  You must make progress through the course faster than 20 minutes a mile.  That means you must go through the first mile faster than 20 minutes, the second mile faster than 40 minutes and so on.

The walk division can be entered via active.com.  Please make sure you check the Half Marathon Walk as you start your entry process.  Changes from the run to the walk division will NOT be made after the event has started.

RACE SCHEDULE & PACKET PICK UP

RACE SCHEDULE & PACKET PICK UP

RACE DAY

5:00am - Registration and Packet Pick Up

      7:00am -  All races start

TIMEKEEPING

The IPICO SportsTag system will be used to time the race.  Tags are to be attached to your left shoe via the supplied tie.  The tags are to be returned at the finish line following the race.

Results will be posted on this website the day of the race.

AWARDS

Age Group awards will be given in 5 year age divisions for the 5K, Half Marathon Walk and Half Marathon Run.

Divisional (age group) awards are based on TAG time and are presented three deep in five year incremental age divisions, both male and female.

Finisher awards will go to all runners who complete the course in under 4 hours and all walkers who complete the course in under 4 hours.

COURSE CLOSURE

We will be doing a rolling closure based on time.  You must maintain a pace of 20 minutes a mile.  If you are not on a 20 minutes a mile pace and you wish to continue the race you will be asked to get on sidewalk.  No course support will be provided to those participants slower than 20 minutes a mile.

IPODS AND AUDIO DEVICES

The Cincinnati Half Marathon discourages the use of personal music devices.  Not only are they a danger to the athlete wearing them but they are also dangerous to those around that athlete.  If wearing an audio device results in you being unable to hear verbal instructions or commands, or approaching vehicles or course marshals on bicycles, you may be asked to relinquish the device or cease running.  That being said, the Cincinnati Half Marathon recognizes the futility of trying to prevent personal music devices and will not outright ban them.  Please take responsibility and use good judgment if you opt to wear an audio device.

ENTRY FEES

Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once we accept your entry, you will not receive a refund if you cannot participate. You may not give or sell your number to anyone else.  Due to the extraordinary cost of putting on the half marathon, and per similar policies at all running races, this policy will apply to all entrants and is in effect whether you are injured, have an unexpected family/business emergency, have a medical emergency, etc. There are no exceptions.

PARKING

There is ample parking throughout downtown Cincinnati.  The Sawyer Point (corner of E. Pete Rose and Eggleston) lot will be open at 5:00am and remain open until 6:30am. Parking at the Sawyer Point lot is $3 on race day.  In addition to the Sawyer Point lot, surrounding parking lots should be open as well.  The charge to park in those lots is $5.  If you do not wish to pay for parking there is ample parking throughout downtown Cincinnati within a short jog of the start line.

Note that the Cincinnati Recreation Commission charges for the Sawyer Point lot it you chose to park there, including for packet pick up and/or race meetings.

There will be NO parking at Public Landing.  Please do not park on Mehring Way or Riverside, just east of Eggleston, as that will result in your car being towed.

T-SHIRT/REFUND POLICY

Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once we accept your entry, you will not receive a refund if you cannot participate. You may not give or sell your number to anyone else.  Due to the extraordinary cost of putting on the half marathon, and per similar policies at all running races, this policy will apply to all entrants and is in effect whether you are injured, have an unexpected family/business emergency, have a medical emergency, etc. There are no exceptions.

Because we are offering technical shirts, you must enter by June 20th to purchase a shirt with your entry. If you wish a women's size we will order you the size indicated on your entry.  Again, to get a shirt with your entry you must enter by June 20th.
